about

After the release of my first solo album Songs from Memory, I turned 40, moved to Portland, put away my guitars, and more or less called it a day. I put a few finished songs on the back burner to focus on writing novels. I wasn’t sure how much I could expect of myself to keep dividing my attention between music and writing. At that point, I was ready to choose one or the other, and I chose.

That all changed with a trip to Arizona in February 2019 to play with my friends in Murphy’s Outlaw. I’d just finish my fourth novel, Nineteen Ways to Destroy Your Rock Band, and I was ready to get out of my head, see some family and friends, remember my musical community, and contribute to it. The Murphy’s Outlaw gig made clear that, as a musician, I still had something to offer. The novel will come out in 2021, but for now, it’s time to make music again.

At 40, I felt too old to make music, but 50 feels like just the right age.

After that Arizona gig, I immediately contacted my high school friend and cohort guitarist/producer Bret Hartley, and Bret zealously supported the idea that we make another album together. I found five songs that I’d left on the back burner way back when, wrote five more over the summer of 2019, and Bret and I got to work with drummer Kevin Leahy on a new album in October. We put the final touches on it over the summer of 2020.
